Volunteering with a Scout Group
Most of our volunteers work directly with young people aged 6-18 through our Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer groups, known as sections – helping young people gain skills for life through activities and adventures.
Working in teams, they might:
- Help to plan and lead activities
- Get involved with days out, camps and expeditions
- Share and learn skills – from crafting to kayaking to fire lighting.
No previous experience with young people? No problem. You can join the fun every week or now and then when time allows. We provide training and support – every step of the way.
One-Off Volunteering Opportunities
We run a number of events which require volunteers to help plan, organise and run.
These are great opportunities for existing volunteers to gain more experience in Scouting and learn new skills as well as have some fantastic experiences. Whatever your skill set and comfort level we can find a task to suit you.
Volunteering with a Scout District
Our Scout Groups are supported by the District Team. The team offers the following and more!
- Advice and support to the scout groups
- Training/skills workshops
- District events for all the sections
- District camps
- International opportunities
- District finances
Working at District level within a team, you might:
- Get the best out of volunteers, using your people and leadership skills
- Help with admin, fundraising, finances, operations, or governance
- Provide support with training
- Get involved in running an event
We can chat you through a whole host of options – including flexible and occasional volunteering.
Volunteering as a Young Leader (14-18 year olds)
Young Leaders are Explorer Scouts who volunteer with a Squirrel Drey, Beaver Colony, Cub Pack or Scout Troop.
They plan, organise and run games, activities and parts of the programme. Young Leaders bring new ideas and youth-shaped thinking. They provide positive role models to the young people they’re leading and are integral members of the section’s leadership team. Young Leaders play a full part in planning, leading and delivering their section’s week-by-week programme.
Young Leaders stand out from their peers and friends because of their highly practical leadership capabilities and experience. They have #skillsforlife.
‘I love being a Young Leader, it’s great fun, and I enjoy helping out the scouts and passing on the skills I have learnt in scouting’ Zara-Mia
‘I am in training, and enjoying every moment’ Thomas
You don’t need to be an experienced scouter, you will receive lots of training and support!
